Stay Safe and Have Fun in Sport in Aberdeen City Council

Aberdeen City Council’s sports development team have been distributing the leaflet Stay Safe and Have Fun in Sport to local youngsters over the past 12 months.

The initiative has seen them target a range of sports across the city, including swimming, girls’ football, netball, athletics, tennis, rugby and golf.

In particular, sessions have been held with young people involved in the disability sports programme, which have allowed the youngsters to discuss the information contained in the leaflet with their coaches and parents in a supported environment.

The young people firstly looked at what made both a good and a bad coach, and then extended this to consider players and spectators as well, before drawing up their own 'code of conduct' for the clubs and sessions they attended.

The sessions have been a real success, resulting in positive behaviours from the children and young people, and have also been well received by parents and carers. The exercise will now be repeated on an annual basis, and has become a starting point for consultation with the youngsters on wider aspects of their coaching experiences.
